CIMA research funding

CIMA advances the science of management accounting by supporting academic research into innovative areas of management accounting which will benefit CGMA designation holders and the broader management accounting profession.

We offer funding to both early career and experienced researchers from anywhere in the world to explore issues and provide fresh perspectives on topics of interest to CIMA members.

Funding categories

Global Calls

We welcome proposals from both early career and experienced applicants that investigate aspects of management accounting that have relevance across multiple geographies, businesses, and industries. Our global Calls are generally held annually.

Our next global Call is scheduled for 2027 and details will be made available on this page in the second half of 2026.

Regional Calls

Our Regional calls for proposals are targeted at management accounting researchers looking to investigate topics within the context of the business and regulatory environment of their region. Additionally, regional calls for proposals seek to support scholars who might not be successful in applying for a global grant.

Southern African Call for Proposals

We have launched our latest regional call for proposals and welcome applications from academic institutions in South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Mauritius, Lesotho, and eSwatini (Swaziland).

More information can be found in our Flyer.

Ad-hoc Calls

We will also consider proposals submitted outside of our regular global and regional Calls. For more information contact research@aicpa-cima.com

Our Programme Governance

Our academic research programme is governed by the Research and Development Panel , who help set our research agenda and oversee the management of funded projects.

All proposals are reviewed for academic rigour, quality, originality, and potential contribution to CIMA’s research objectives for accounting and finance professionals in business and industry by an external Panel.

Panel members are drawn from two virtual advisory groups – the CIMA Research Board, made up of management accounting academics and the CIMA Advisory Panel, made up of CIMA members.

More information on these bodies, including member biographies, can be found on our academic advisers page.
